Cathedral Church, Jakarta. Jakarta Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Jakarta, Indonesia, which is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Jakarta. Its official name is Gereja Santa Perawan Maria Diangkat Ke Surga (from Dutch, De Kerk van Onze Lieve Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming, in English: The Church of Our Lady of Assumption). This current cathedral was consecrated in 1901 and built in the neo-gothic style or Gothic revival architecture, a common architectural style to build churches at that time. The present church was designed and initiated by Antonius Dijkmans, a Pastor, and the first stone was laid by Provicaris Carolus Wenneker. This work was continued by Cuypers-Hulswit when Dijkmans could not continue, and then inaugurated and blessed on April 21, 1901 by Mgr. Edmundus Sybradus Luypen, SJ, Apostolic Vicar of Jakarta. The Jakarta Cathedral is located in Central Jakarta near Merdeka Square and Merdeka Palace, it stands right in the front of the Istiqlal Mosque. Another uniqueness is due to the harmony of the close relationship among religions in Indonesia, on Christmas Day and Easter, the number of people whose vehicles are not accommodated in Cathedral parking area can use part of the yard of Istiqlal Mosque to park their vehicles. Vice versa, in Eid al-Fitr, Muslims may park their vehicles in the Church Cathedral yard. |
